Tripura's traditional fermented bamboo shoot Melye-amiley found to possess an anti-obesity property
Background
A study has found that Melye-amiley, a traditional fermented bamboo shoot variety from Tripura, possesses an anti-obesity property.
The work was carried out at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology, and was led by Prof. Mojibur R. Khan.
The extract can reduce intracellular lipid accumulation through increased expression of lipolytic genes such as HSL and LPL and of fat-browning regulators including UCP1, PRDM16 and PGC1-alpha.
The treatment activates thermogenic protein expression via the AMPK signalling pathway, stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis and enhancing fatty acid beta-oxidation.
This boosts energy expenditure in white adipocytes, offering an option for weight management and metabolic health.
The findings were published in the journal Food Frontiers.
