German gross domestic product rises 0.2 per cent in the third quarter, says the Federal Statistical Office

Germany's Federal Statistical Office, known as Destatis, released its first estimate for the third quarter of 2026.
Gross domestic product rose by 0.2 per cent against the second quarter, after adjustment for price, seasonal and calendar effects.
Measured against the third quarter of 2025, price-adjusted GDP was 1.3 per cent higher, and 1.2 per cent higher once calendar effects were also taken out.
The office said final consumption expenditure increased slightly over the previous quarter, while capital formation fell on the provisional figures.
Export growth, which had been very strong in the first half of 2026, slowed noticeably in the third quarter.
Destatis is the central statistical authority of the Federal Republic of Germany and publishes the national accounts.
The detailed results for the quarter are due on 25 November 2026.

Two German scientists share the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for optogenetics

Two scientists working in Germany, Peter Hegemann of Humboldt University in Berlin and Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg, won a share of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
They share the prize with Karl Deisseroth of Stanford University and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the United States.
The award recognises their work on light-gated ion channels and on the technique known as optogenetics, described as the discovery of a molecular switch for nerve cells.
Optogenetics combines light with genetic changes in neurons so that researchers can switch individual cells in a living brain on or off.
The method has let scientists map how particular cell types shape behaviour such as learning, fear, addiction and movement.
The prize is decided by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
The three laureates share prize money of 12 million Swedish crowns.

Germany and Britain agree to widen their Trinity House pact's Cyber Lighthouse Project to cover artificial intelligence

Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and Britain's Defence Secretary Wes Streeting issued a joint statement after the second Defence Ministerial Council held under the Trinity House Agreement.
That agreement is the bilateral defence pact the two countries signed in October 2024, and the statement says it has since been reinforced by the Kensington Treaty.
They committed to expand the Cyber Lighthouse Project, which runs under that agreement, so that it takes in artificial intelligence as well.
They will begin with a handful of military tasks that both armed forces share, trying the technology out on those first before taking it further.
They also reviewed their joint Deep Precision Strike project, a long-range weapon of over 2,000 km range that is to be delivered within this decade.
On the same day the two National Armaments Directors signed an Implementing Arrangement on cooperation in Sting Ray procurement.
The statement records that German Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft flew from Britain for the first time on an episodic basis, with support from RAF Lossiemouth.
It also notes that Germany and Britain together co-chair the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, that both belong to the Coalition of the Willing, and that the ministers want the work carried on through 2027.
