Kerala to lay foundation for ₹260 crore new fishing harbour at Vizhinjam, required under the port's environmental clearance

The new fishing harbour at Vizhinjam is required as part of the environmental clearance for the Vizhinjam International Port.
Its estimated construction cost is ₹260 crore, funded by the state government under the concession agreement signed with Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd.
The existing fishing harbour will be renovated for ₹90 crore, to be completed in two years; the state government bears the cost through VISL and the Harbour Engineering Department carries out the work.
A new breakwater costing ₹125 crore will reduce wave turbulence inside both fishing harbours.
Compensation for the extra fuel burnt on longer trips caused by the international port's breakwater construction had lapsed. About 2000 beneficiaries will now get compensation as livelihood assistance in place of kerosene, by DBT, and the government has earmarked ₹35 crore for it.
Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan will lay the foundation stone of the new harbour, inaugurate the renovation and distribute the assistance on 9 October at 3 p.m. at Thennoorkonam on the Vizhinjam–Poovar road, with Fisheries Minister V. E. Abdul Gafoor presiding.

Revenue Department measures Kerala University land near AKG Centre on High Court direction

The Revenue Department is measuring Kerala University land at its Thiruvananthapuram headquarters, next to the AKG Study and Research Centre.
The survey follows the High Court's intervention on a petition by R. S. Sasikumar, a syndicate member and chairman of the Save University Campaign Committee. Onmanorama reports that the court permitted the syndicate to implement its decision to measure and demarcate the university's land.
The petition concerns land allotted in 1977 for the AKG Centre for Study and Research.
The Thiruvananthapuram Tahsildar is leading the survey, which was delayed by the clearing of undergrowth near the university compound.
Madhyamam reports that the court order requires the land to be measured and the details given by 15 October.
The Tahsildar said the survey would not cover the land on which the AKG Centre stands; that land would be surveyed only if the court later directs it.
Revenue Minister A. P. Anilkumar said the court's direction at present is only to measure and demarcate the university's land, and that any question of encroachment is for the court to decide.
