Gandak reaches a record 91.25 metres at Bagaha; embankments breach in Saran, Gopalganj and Muzaffarpur

Heavy rainfall in Nepal's Gandak basin pushed the Gandak to 91.25 metres at Bagaha in West Champaran, above the previous highest flood level of 90.90 metres set on 29 September 2024, the Bihar Water Resources Department said. The river's highest flood discharge of 2026, 5,43,500 cusecs (5.435 lakh), had been recorded at Valmikinagar on 28 September. Embankments were breached in Saran and Gopalganj (Sheetalpur-Banjariya), and a ring embankment of the Tirhut Main Embankment breached in Muzaffarpur. More than 200 villages were affected, and the Chief Minister made an aerial survey of West Champaran to direct relief and rescue operations.

Ghatal Master Plan gets Rs 1,200 crore to end recurring floods in Medinipur

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced an allocation of Rs 1,200 crore for the Ghatal Master Plan in the current financial year. The flood control project is estimated to cost about Rs 1,500 crore in all, shared equally between the Centre and the state. It covers 11 blocks and five municipalities across Purba and Paschim Medinipur, an area of 1,659 sq km, spanning five assembly and three Lok Sabha constituencies. Excess water is to be channelled through canals and rivers into the Rupnarayan, the main drainage outlet. The plan was first drawn up in the 1970s at an estimated Rs 50 crore and had not been executed for about 50 years. The Chief Minister said work should be carried out on a war footing after Durga Puja and completed by June next year, before the monsoon begins.

Allocation this financial year: Rs 1,200 crore Total project cost: About Rs 1,500 crore Area covered: 1,659 sq km Main drainage outlet: Rupnarayan river Original 1970s estimate: Rs 50 crore

Nature paper finds butterfly wing patterns create illusory motion that misleads attacking predators

Nature published on 30 September 2026 a study from the Centre for Ecology and Conservation at the University of Exeter showing that butterfly wing markings work together with flight dynamics to create illusory motion.
High-speed video of take-offs filmed at 1,000 frames per second showed that patterned wings produced significantly greater motion confusion than unpatterned treatments.
A phylogenetically controlled analysis of 757 morphotypes across 397 European butterfly species found the effect to be an evolutionarily widespread strategy.
Digital evolution experiments using genetic algorithms, selecting only for motion confusion, independently produced high-contrast butterfly-like wing patterns.
In a touch-screen test with 100 human participants over 3,000 trials, attacks fell further behind the butterfly as forwards confusion rose: between the most and the least confusing species tested, the centre of attacks shifted backwards by about 38 per cent of average body length.
The authors describe the combination as potentially one of the most successful visual defence strategies in moving animals.

Species in phylogenetic analysis: 397 European butterfly species Backward shift in attack centre, most vs least confusing species: about 38 per cent of average body length Institution: University of Exeter
Why it matters for exams: Camouflage and mimicry are standard ecology topics, and this gives a dated primary study with precise numbers.

Nature study reclassifies the Scottish fossil Westlothiana as a stem tetrapod with aquatic adaptations

Nature published on 30 September 2026 a study that reclassifies Westlothiana lizziae, one of the best known fossils from East Kirkton in West Lothian, Scotland.
The specimen dates to the Early Carboniferous, in the Visean stage.
It had been widely cited as the earliest terrestrially adapted stem amniote, that is a land-adapted close relative of the amniotes; the new phylogenetic analyses return it instead as a stem tetrapod.
The evidence includes unexpected plesiomorphies of the skull roof, palate, braincase and mandible, together with aquatic adaptations such as an ossified internal gill skeleton and extensive denticles on the palate and mandible.
The authors conclude that terrestrial adaptations, including an amniote-like pedal formula, the loss of fin-like forelimb function and superficially claw-like terminal phalanges, evolved in a mosaic fashion in a transitional, amphibious context before the origin of the tetrapod crown group.

Congress says Centre has moved Supreme Court to stay Calcutta High Court hearings on Great Nicobar Island project

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on 30 September 2026, citing a media report, that the Union government has approached the Supreme Court seeking a stay on proceedings in the Calcutta High Court on petitions challenging the Great Nicobar Island Project.
According to Ramesh, the Calcutta High Court had upheld the right of a petitioner to file her challenge, which the Centre had questioned.
The project includes a proposed transhipment port at Galathea Bay; Ramesh says its cost has been revised upward from Rs 72,000 crore to Rs 92,000 crore.
The Congress argues that the port could cause large-scale ecological damage, including destruction of coral colonies, and one of the petitions concerns violations of the Forest Rights Act, 2006.
Five petitions are pending in the Calcutta High Court; the final hearing in the Forest Rights Act petition is fixed for 25-26 November 2026, Ramesh said.
He said 5 October 2026 is the likely date on which the Supreme Court will hear the Centre's plea.
