The Act covers up to 75% of the rural population and 50% of the urban population under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and priority households.
AAY households, the poorest of the poor, are entitled to 35 kg of foodgrains per family per month.

WFP warns Yemen hunger surge could spread beyond its borders as 150,000 are displaced

The World Food Programme warned that renewed conflict in Yemen has triggered a surge in hunger with consequences for the wider region.
Fighting between Government forces and Houthi rebels along the southwestern coast has forced nearly 150,000 people from their homes and disrupted markets.
More than 18 million people nationwide face acute food insecurity and some 2.2 million children under five are acutely malnourished.
Nearly three out of four households in accessible areas are unable to meet their basic needs.
The fighting has cut off access to parts of Taiz and Hudaydah, preventing the agency and its partners from reaching some 350,000 people.
At least 3,700 Yemenis have crossed the Bab al-Mandab Strait to seek shelter in Djibouti.
The agency noted that Bab al-Mandab, the Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz are all under pressure at the same time.

Nature study finds agricultural liming is a carbon sink, not a source, in the Mississippi River Basin

A paper in Nature, in the issue dated 1 October 2026, reports that agricultural liming acts as a carbon sink in the Mississippi River Basin rather than a net source of carbon dioxide. Liming is the spreading of carbonate minerals such as limestone and dolomite on farmland to counter soil acidification. The authors estimate about 0.44 GtCO2 of carbon dioxide removal potential from the lime added to the basin since 1900, with roughly 90 per cent of that realised at the catchment scale. The Mississippi River Basin covers 41 per cent of the land area of the contiguous United States and 65 per cent of its cropland. The study argues that current accounting frameworks apply an incomplete counterfactual, attributing carbon dioxide emissions to the lime rather than to the human-caused acid inputs that drive the release. Measured against those acid inputs, liming is a net sink on decadal to century timescales while also improving crop yields and soil health. Institutions involved include the Environmental Defense Fund and Yale University.
