About 1,500 pilgrims escorted past a landslide at Chirbasa on the Kedarnath trek route

Joint teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) rescued and escorted approximately 1,500 pilgrims to Gaurikund on 28 September 2026.
The pilgrims were held up at Chirbasa, about 3 km from Gaurikund on the Kedarnath trek route, where debris from a landslide had blocked the path.
Continuous rockfalls from the hillside made movement across the stretch hazardous, so the teams guided the pilgrims across the slide zone on foot.
The SDRF team was led by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri from Sonprayag.
The Char Dham Yatra had been suspended for two consecutive days because of heavy rainfall when the rescue was carried out.

Pilgrims escorted to safety: approximately 1,500 Distance of Chirbasa from Gaurikund: about 3 km
Why it matters for exams: The three-tier SDRF-NDRF-DDRF structure and the Gaurikund road head are standard disaster-management questions.

Algeria's lower house adopts a penal code amendment allowing the death penalty for forest arson

Members of Algeria's National People's Assembly voted on Thursday to amend the penal code so that the death penalty can be imposed for arson.
The amendment covers anyone who attempts to undermine public security and order, national unity or economic and environmental stability.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called for the amendment in September 2026, after at least 12 people died in wildfires in the country's northeast.
Algeria has kept a moratorium on carrying out executions since the last case in 1993.
Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa said the adoption of the death penalty for these acts is the appropriate legal response to curb such crimes.
Amnesty International called the move "a deeply retrograde response" and urged a focus on prevention and emergency response.
The text now goes to the upper house, the Council of the Nation, before ratification by the President.

Haritha Karma Sena: the doorstep collection force that Kerala's sanitation drive runs on

The new State waste management campaign launched this week is to be carried out through local self-government bodies, where doorstep waste collection is done by the Haritha Karma Sena, so its structure is worth knowing.
The Haritha Karma Sena works in the field of sanitation and waste management in local self-government bodies in Kerala, collecting cleaned non-organic waste, and in some cases organic waste, from the doorstep of households and institutions.
It was established in 2017 under the Haritha Keralam Mission project.
Haritha Keralam Mission, Kudumbashree, Suchitwa Mission, Clean Kerala Company and the Local Self-Government bodies are the partners in the venture.
Local self-government bodies provide vehicles, uniforms and identity cards to the workers.
Residents pay a user fee fixed by the local self-government body on the basis of a Government Order.
Waste collected is taken to material collection facilities, sorted, and sent on to resource recovery centres for reuse or recycling.

South-West Indian Ocean forum forecasts drought in the south and floods in the north as El Nino strengthens

The strengthening El Nino is set to affect temperature, rainfall and tropical cyclone patterns across the South-West Indian Ocean region, the World Meteorological Organization said, publishing the outlook of the region's Climate Outlook Forum.
The outlook covers October to December 2026 and January to March 2027, and the forum urged governments and communities to prepare for multiple hazards rather than a single impact scenario.
It forecasts drier conditions and increased drought risk across the southern part of the region, particularly South Africa, southern and central Mozambique, Malawi and south-western Madagascar.
Wetter conditions and increased flood risk are expected across parts of the north, particularly Tanzania, northern Malawi, Seychelles and parts of the Mascarene Islands.
Above-normal temperatures are expected across the entire region, with a substantially increased likelihood of exceptionally high temperatures, while tropical cyclone activity for the basin overall is forecast to be below normal with tracks shifting southward.
The fifteenth session of the forum was hosted by the Seychelles Meteorological Agency from 15 to 17 September and also factored in the Indian Ocean Dipole, which has been moving from a neutral state towards a positive phase.

Hawaii's 90-foot Holei Sea Arch collapses into the Pacific, the National Park Service confirms

The United States National Park Service confirmed that the Holei Sea Arch in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has collapsed into the Pacific Ocean.
The 90-foot arch was still standing on Wednesday 23 September and had collapsed by Sunday night 27 September.
The exact time of the collapse is unknown and it could have occurred while the park was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo.
Seismic activity from the 2018 Kilauea eruption had damaged the nearby cliffs.
New cracks prompted the closure of the original viewing area in January 2020, and surf from Tropical Storm Darby later broke off a chunk of rock from the lower part of the arch.
The park service warned that cliff edges in the area are unstable and can collapse without warning.

Allahabad High Court registers a fresh suo motu PIL on noise pollution after a schoolgirl's death in Balrampur

The Allahabad High Court has registered a fresh suo motu Public Interest Litigation on noise pollution.
The order was passed by a Lucknow bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Manjive Shukla, which was hearing an existing PIL on the misuse of pressure horns, modified silencers and hooters.
The court recorded that a Class 2 student of Divine Public School on City Palace Road in Bhagautiganj, Balrampur, collapsed in her classroom on 22 September when loudspeakers and a music system were being played at high volume during a nearby procession, and that she could not be saved after being taken for medical treatment.
The bench made it clear that it had not reached any conclusion on the cause of the child's death, but said the circumstances were sufficient for it to take cognisance of the matter.
It observed that noise pollution was becoming a menace despite its recognition under the Environment Protection Act, 1986 and the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.
The new proceedings will examine compliance with those statutory provisions and the measures needed to curb noise pollution, with senior advocate Gaurav Mehrotra continuing as amicus curiae.
The court directed the state counsel to obtain reports from the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police of Balrampur, and listed the matter for further hearing on 12 October.

Bench: Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Manjive Shukla, Lucknow District: Balrampur Date of the incident: 22 September Provisions to be examined: Environment Protection Act, 1986 and Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 Next hearing: 12 October
