World Bank's Yemen Economic Monitor records a 1.5 per cent fall in real GDP and projects a further 0.5 per cent contraction

Yemen's economy remains under strain, having contracted again in 2025 and now facing additional pressures linked to the conflict in the Middle East, the World Bank said on 21 May 2026.
The Spring 2026 edition of the Yemen Economic Monitor, titled Pushing Against the Tide, finds that national real GDP declined by 1.5 per cent in 2025 and is projected to contract by a further 0.5 per cent in 2026.
Oil exports are still blocked, and funding for the UN Response Plan covered only 28 per cent of needs, down from 56.5 per cent in 2024.
Revenues fell to 5.6 per cent of GDP, driven by reduced external grants.
The Yemeni rial in Aden appreciated sharply in August 2025 and has since stabilized, supported by Central Bank measures and external inflows including Saudi financial support.
Nearly three-quarters of the population is estimated to live below the poverty line.
Dina Abu-Ghaida, World Bank Group Country Manager for Yemen, said the economy has limited buffers to absorb new shocks.

Real GDP in 2025: Declined by 1.5 per cent Projection for 2026: A further contraction of 0.5 per cent UN Response Plan funding: 28 per cent of needs, down from 56.5 per cent in 2024 Revenues: 5.6 per cent of GDP Report title: Pushing Against the Tide, Spring 2026 edition
Why it matters for exams: The Yemeni rial, the role of the Central Bank in Aden and the World Bank's growth numbers are the economy questions most likely to be set on Yemen.

WHO raises its immediate funding need for Yemen from $9 million to $31 million

The World Health Organization said on 7 October 2026 that significantly more resources are required to scale up its response in Yemen amid escalating conflict.
WHO's immediate funding requirements have increased from $9 million to $31 million, with an additional $700,000 needed to support refugees in Djibouti.
Fighting has mainly occurred on the coast in Lahj governorate near the strategic Bab al-Mandeb Strait, in neighbouring Taiz governorate and in Marib governorate in northern Yemen.
As of 2 October there were 959 reported deaths and 4,207 injuries across 10 governorates, according to the Yemeni health authorities.
Trauma stabilization points on the Lahj coast and in Al-Dhale have no partners to operate them, and emergency maternity services have been suspended in Marib and Ras Al-Arah.
Of the nearly 198,000 people uprooted, less than one per cent had received health services as of the previous week.
Dr Syed Jaffar Hussain, WHO Representative in Yemen, said the situation is evolving into a complex emergency.

Nature analysis finds China overtook the United States as the largest spender on research and development on a purchasing power parity basis

A Nature news feature published on 14 October 2026 traces China's rise in science. In 1978 China published fewer than 120 papers in international journals, 0.02 per cent of the global total, according to Elsevier's Scopus. China's overall research and development spending rose roughly 100-fold over three decades and grew by more than 10 per cent a year on average over the past ten years. OECD data show that in 2024 China overtook the United States as the largest gross domestic expenditure on research and development measured at purchasing power parity; at market exchange rates China's spending was about half the United States level in 2024, up from 8 per cent in 2004. China plans to raise research and development expenditure by at least 7 per cent a year through 2030. Basic research took just under 7 per cent of China's research budget in 2024, against 14.4 per cent in the United States, 11.6 per cent in Japan and 14.7 per cent in South Korea; the share reached a record 7.08 per cent in 2025 but missed the previous five-year plan's 8 per cent target. China surpassed the United States in 2023 as the top-ranked country for papers in influential journals, according to the Nature Index, which tracks 178 journals. The feature cautions against reading the purchasing power parity figure as settling the question, because comparing the research and development spending of two countries is complex.

The International Monetary Fund projects that the UAE economy will contract by 3.9 per cent in 2026 and rebound by 7.7 per cent in 2027. The projection is in the Fund's October 2026 World Economic Outlook, titled Resilience Under Strain, Urgent Choices, presented at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok. Gulf News reports that the rebound is conditional on shipping routes normalising and the Strait of Hormuz reopening. Gulf states' diesel exports more than halve during the war on Iran

BBC Verify, using figures from the shipping data company Kpler, says global diesel exports fell from around 6.8 million barrels per day in 2025 to around 5.8 million barrels per day in September 2026.
Exports from the Gulf states - Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman - fell from around 1.4 million barrels per day in 2025 to around 670,000 barrels per day in September 2026.
BBC Verify says this decline has been driven by the impact of the United States-Iran war on flows of refined diesel from the Gulf states through the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has been disrupted by Iranian strikes on tankers and the United States blockade of Iran's ports.
Average United States retail diesel prices were $6.20 per gallon on 5 October 2026, against a record $6.50 per gallon on 21 September and around $3.50 before the war, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
UK diesel cost 199p a litre on 5 October 2026, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

World Bank estimates a 2.7 per cent contraction in Iran's economy and flags water and energy shortages

The World Bank's country page for the Islamic Republic of Iran says GDP is estimated to have contracted by 2.7 per cent in 2025/26, the Iranian year ending March 20, 2026.
The Bank attributes the contraction to military escalation in June 2025, widespread protests and strikes, a country-wide internet and telecommunications blackout, and trade disruptions in March 2026 amid growing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
It says oil sector performance is expected to be constrained by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, at least in the near term, while non-oil growth is projected to be limited by damaged infrastructure, persistent water and energy shortages, and weakened investment sentiment.
The Bank says high inflation and declining real incomes are projected to suppress domestic demand, and that poverty is expected to increase, driven by high food inflation and import shortages.
It adds that international trade is likely to remain constrained by financial sanctions and by challenges in securing international transport and insurance services.
The World Bank has produced the Iran Economic Monitor, its economic report on the country, since April 2016.

IMF says the world withstood the energy shock of the war on Iran better than feared, but emergency oil stocks are now depleted

The International Monetary Fund published its twice-yearly World Economic Outlook on Tuesday in Bangkok, where the IMF and the World Bank are holding their annual meetings.
The Fund said global growth had withstood the Middle East conflict better than feared over the past six months, and that the rerouting of oil supplies away from the Strait of Hormuz and the release of strategic energy stocks had helped to contain the impact on oil prices from the United States-Iran war.
It warned that emergency stocks are now depleted, and that high debt levels and deficits in many countries could leave governments with little capacity to protect consumers from any future jump in prices.
"Without shoring up supply capacity and replenishing policy buffers, the global economy could soon test the limits of resilience," the report said.
The IMF revised its forecast for global growth this year up to 3.1 per cent, against 3 per cent in its July update, and left next year's forecast unchanged at 3.4 per cent.
Launching the report, the IMF's economic counsellor Silvana Tenreyro said "the global economy has been resilient, but that resilience is reaching its limits".
The IMF also said the economic fallout from the conflict remained "highly uncertain".

CAG puts undue benefit to contractors in Rebuild Kerala roadworks at Rs 67.49 crore

A Comptroller and Auditor General report on roadworks under the Rebuild Kerala Initiative found deficiencies in project planning, deviations from contractual provisions and irregular payment arrangements that gave contractors undue financial benefit and added to the State's financial burden.
Under the initiative, 29 roads spanning 718.94 km across 13 districts were selected for reconstruction during 2019-20 and 2020-21 at a sanctioned cost of Rs 5,119.54 crore.
The CAG examined 10 of the 29 roadworks, implemented by the Kerala State Transport Project, as part of its compliance audit.
On the Alappuzha-Changanassery road the audit identified an undue benefit of Rs 39.27 crore to the contractor after deviations in the procedure for approving changes to bridge-widening works.
A further Rs 28.22 crore of undue benefit was attributed to the splitting of payment stages for earthwork and ground-improvement works, which in some cases allowed payments between 333 and 911 days ahead of the scheduled completion of the stage.
The Uruvachal-Maruthayi road contract, awarded for Rs 100.43 crore in October 2020, was entirely subcontracted for Rs 93.67 crore in August 2021, contrary to the agreement conditions.
The audit observed that this undermined the tendering process, which required bids to be considered only from contractors who had qualified through technical evaluation.
